Tuting, Nov 28: Kepang La Day was commemorated recently with ceremonial grandeur, patriotic fervour and deep collective reverence across the Upper Siang frontier. Organised under the aegis of the Spear Corps in close coordination with the Upper Siang District Administration, the observance highlighted the strategic importance of the frontier region while honouring the courage, unity and sacrifice that define the area.
The presence of Lt Gen Abhijit S Pendharkar, General Officer Commanding (GOC), Spear Corps, and local MLA Alo Libang added distinction to the solemn occasion, reaffirming the Indian Army’s enduring commitment to safeguarding India’s northern borders.
The commemoration commenced at Tuting Top, where a majestic 72-feet National Flag was inaugurated with full military honours. The towering Tricolour now stands as a powerful symbol of India’s unity, resilience and unwavering resolve to protect every inch of its territory.
The installation was made possible through the generous contribution of philanthropist and social worker Uma Maskai, along with the dedicated efforts of Indian Army personnel. Her gesture was warmly acknowledged by both civil and military communities.
Simultaneously, a 30-feet iron-forged “TUTING” signage was unveiled, establishing a permanent emblem of national identity and frontier pride.
The commemorative programme then moved to Gelling, the first village of India where the Tricolour greets the rising sun. Situated at the point where the Siang River enters Indian territory, Gelling holds immense strategic and symbolic significance as the northern gateway to the Siang Valley.
At Kepang La Pass, Lt Gen Pendharkar paid homage to the fallen heroes of the 1962 Battle of Kepang La by laying a wreath at the Chorten and cemetery of soldiers of 2 MADRAS and 11 Assam Rifles. The solemn tribute honoured their supreme sacrifice, indomitable spirit and unwavering devotion to national duty. The engraved names stand as an eternal reminder of the courage displayed in defence of the motherland under the harshest of conditions.
Adding further meaning to the observance, a bike rally was organised from Tuting to Kepang La through the rugged mountain roads of Upper Siang, with 25 enthusiastic civilian riders from nearby border areas participating. Their involvement reflected the deep bond between the Armed Forces and local communities and their shared commitment to protecting the frontier.
For the first time in the Vibrant Village of Tuting, an inter-school sports meet was also organised, featuring impressive demonstrations by AMAR-trained students. The event encouraged youth participation and reinforced the values of discipline, patriotism and resilience among the younger generation.
The observance of Kepang La Day concluded with a renewed pledge of unity and determination, affirming the unwavering national resolve and the collective commitment of soldiers and civilians to safeguard India’s sovereignty, dignity and territorial integrity.
