Tezu, Jun 8: In a major step towards strengthening sustainable waste management practices and nurturing future environmental leaders, the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Internship Programme was officially launched here on Sunday last.
A total of 12 interns have been selected for the programme. The initiative aims to provide young students with practical exposure to scientific solid waste management, waste segregation, recycling processes, community awareness campaigns, and sustainable urban sanitation practices. The programme seeks to build local capacity while encouraging youth participation in environmental stewardship and civic responsibility.
Speaking at the launch event, Lohit SP Thupten Jampa emphasized the importance of engaging young people in addressing the growing challenges of waste management and environmental conservation.
The internship programme is expected to equip participants with hands-on experience in waste collection systems, material recovery operations, public outreach, data collection, and innovative waste reduction strategies.
The programme aligns with the district administration’s ongoing efforts to transform Tezu into a model town for effective solid waste management.
Addressing the gathering, the EE UD highlighted the Solid Waste Management Rules 2026, user fees, noting that through this internship programme, participants will become ambassadors for environmental sustainability and contribute meaningfully to creating a cleaner and greener Tezu.
The SWM internship programme is expected to serve as a platform for innovation, skill development, and community engagement, while supporting the broader vision of sustainable urban development and environmental responsibility in Lohit district, officials said.
