Painaktang: From Drug Corridor to Drug-Free Village

BALEMU, Feb 3: Under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, and through the joint efforts of the district administration, police, and local villagers, Painaktang village in West Kameng district—once affected by drug abuse, underground militancy and lack of basic amenities—has been officially declared a Drug-Free Village.

Once known as a drug corridor, officials said, the village has undergone a remarkable transformation through community participation and sustained awareness drives. As part of the shift towards lawful and sustainable livelihoods, villagers have moved away from illegal cannabis cultivation and are now engaged in dignified farming of vanilla and dragon fruits.

Assistant Commissioner of Balemu, Hage Atho, formally handed over certificates declaring Painaktang as a drug-free village. Addressing the villagers, the ADC urged them to remain socially vigilant and continue promoting awareness, prevention, and collective responsibility to ensure the village remains free from drugs.

The transformation of Painaktang stands as a powerful example of how community cooperation and consistent administrative support can bring lasting social change.
