NERIST hosts workshop on wildlife conservation tools and technology

NIRJULI, Feb 3: The Department of Forestry, North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology (NERIST), in collaboration with the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) and the Arunachal Pradesh Forest Department, organised a one-day workshop on “Wildlife Conservation Tools and Technology” at NERIST on Tuesday.

The workshop brought together over 100 conservation scientists, researchers, academicians, and students to discuss practical strategies for wildlife protection in the Eastern Himalaya region.

Inaugurating the programme, NERIST Director Prof Narendranath S emphasised the need to integrate modern technology with field-based conservation practices and highlighted the role of academic institutions in addressing challenges such as habitat fragmentation, wildlife crime, and climate change.

Prof MB Sharma, Dean (R&D), NERIST, and Millo Tasser, Conservator of Forests, also attended and stressed the importance of research, community participation, and traditional ecological knowledge in conservation.

Technical sessions featured expert presentations on species recovery, wildlife monitoring, conservation breeding, biodiversity documentation, wildlife forensics, butterfly diversity, and rehabilitation ecology. Resource persons included experts from WTI, ATREE, ZSI, Tezpur University, USTM Meghalaya, and other institutions.

The workshop highlighted tools such as camera trapping, field monitoring techniques, community-based conservation models, and the role of research institutions in supporting the Forest Department.

Faculty members, research scholars, and students from NERIST, Rajiv Gandhi University, ZSI, and other institutions actively participated in interactive sessions.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks, reaffirming NERIST’s commitment to advancing science-based wildlife conservation and nurturing future conservation professionals in the biodiversity-rich Eastern Himalayas.
