Minister reviews Mehao tiger attack, orders immediate safety measures

Itanagar, Feb 4: Forest and Environment Minister Wangki Lowang on Wednesday held a review meeting with senior officers of the Department of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of Arunachal Pradesh, following the tragic tiger attack that claimed a human life along the Roing-Anini road in Mayodia area under Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary.

According to reports, Chow Chikseng Manpang of Manfaiseng village in Namsai district, who was serving as Head Constable (WT) at Roing Police Station, lost his life after being attacked by a tiger in Mayudia area of Lower Dibang Valley district on Monday. The policeman was reportedly returning to Roing on a motorcycle after performing official duty at Anini, and his mutilated body was recovered from the Mayudia area on Tuesday.

Describing the incident as deeply unfortunate, Minister Lowang expressed profound grief over the loss of human life and extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family during this moment of immense grief.

The Minister informed that the department has initiated a series of immediate measures to address the situation and ensure public safety. 

These include the deployment of expert veterinary teams and wildlife specialists to the affected area, mobilisation of Special Tiger Protection Force (STPF) guards along with field staff for ground-level support, and the constitution of a technical expert committee for continuous monitoring of the situation.

Lowang further stated that permission has been granted for the safe capture and rehabilitation of the animal, strictly in accordance with national wildlife management protocols.

Separately, the Forest Department has initiated the process for providing ex-gratia assistance of Rs 10 lakh to the family of the deceased, along with extended institutional support at the district level.

The Minister emphasised that all actions are being undertaken with utmost sensitivity, prioritizing human safety while ensuring responsible, ethical and scientific wildlife management.
