Capacity building prog on bio-fortified rice varieties organised at Tawang

Tawang, Feb 9: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Tawang, in collaboration with the ICAR–Indian Institute of Rice Research (IIRR), Hyderabad, organised a one-day capacity building training and farmers’ interaction programme on bio-fortified rice varieties under the NEH programme at Zomkhang Hall here on Monday.

The programme was attended by Keertika Kashyap, DDC, NABARD, Tawang, as the chief guest, while Nawang Chonzom, Chairperson, Tawang Green Farmers Producer Company, was the guest of honour. Scientists from ICAR-IIRR, including Dr C N Neeraja, Principal Scientist (NEH), along with other experts, interacted with farmers and shared technical knowledge.

During the sessions, farmers were informed about bio-fortified rice varieties suitable for hilly regions, their nutritional benefits, and improved cultivation practices. A soil testing kit distributed under the programme was also demonstrated, highlighting its application for on-farm soil testing.

Addressing the gathering, the DDC, NABARD highlighted ongoing and upcoming NABARD initiatives in the district and stressed the importance of capacity building for farmers. Speakers also emphasised the need to adopt improved agricultural technologies and strengthen farmer institutions.

The programme concluded with the distribution of bio-fortified rice seeds developed by ICAR-IIRR and witnessed active participation from farmers, marking a step forward in promoting nutrition-rich crops and sustainable agriculture in Tawang district.
