Guv calls for collective responsibility to keep Capital clean

Itanagar, Feb 17: Emphasising that cleanliness must be maintained in every nook and corner of the Capital Complex, State Governor Lt General (Retd) KT Parnaik appealed to citizens to share collective responsibility in ensuring a clean and healthy Itanagar.

Stressing civic consciousness, the Governor urged residents to respect public spaces, practise hygienic habits, and willingly contribute towards the cost of essential services provided by the Itanagar Municipal Corporation (IMC).

The Governor chaired a high-level review meeting on cleanliness and civic amenities at Lok Bhavan, Itanagar on Tuesday. The meeting assessed the prevailing state of sanitation and civic facilities in the Capital city.

The meeting was attended by Chief Secretary Manish Kumar Gupta, senior officials from the Home, Urban Development, Public Works, Public Health Engineering & Water Supply, and Housing Departments, along with IMC Mayor Likha Nari Tadar and her team.

The Governor called for judicious utilisation of IMC funds and highlighted the need for active involvement of corporators in planning and implementation processes. He stated that corporators must mobilise public cooperation to uphold cleanliness and ensure adherence to civic duties.

Expressing concern over the upkeep of the city’s cremation ground, he said the facility must be maintained with dignity and respect for public sentiments. He underscored the importance of proper record-keeping, regular maintenance, and responsible management to keep the premises clean, orderly, and accessible to all.

Highlighting the Capital’s visual and environmental appeal, the Governor proposed that the road from Donyi Polo Airport to the Capital city be developed as a green corridor showcasing the rich flora and fauna of the state. He advised the Urban Development Department, District Administration, and the IMC to work in close coordination to realise this vision.

Addressing the meeting, the State Chief Secretary suggested greater coordination among departments and institutions to improve service delivery. Commissioner (Urban Development) Vivek Pandey presented a detailed overview of waste disposal mechanisms, sanitation initiatives, and proposed remedial measures to enhance civic amenities under the IMC.

Mayor Likha Nari Tadar shared her vision of a plastic-free Capital and outlined the challenges faced by the civic body, calling for active public cooperation to achieve sustainable cleanliness and improved urban management.

Earlier, the IMC Mayor called on the Governor at Lok Bhavan and shared her vision for the planned development of the Capital city. She also highlighted the challenges faced in strengthening civic amenities and urban governance.

The Governor advised the Mayor, who represents Ward No. 16, to actively motivate citizens and corporators to participate in cleanliness drives and to foster a strong sense of civic responsibility among residents. He underscored the need to encourage public ownership of municipal initiatives to ensure sustained improvements in sanitation and infrastructure.

Emphasising responsive governance, the Governor called for prompt redressal of public grievances and stressed transparency and accountability in the delivery of municipal services to build trust between the civic body and the people.

Highlighting the importance of coordination, he further advised the Mayor to work closely with municipal departments, contractors, and other government agencies. He urged close monitoring of sanitation, waste management, water supply, and road maintenance projects to ensure their timely and efficient implementation.

The Governor exhorted the Mayor to set clear priorities for urban development and sanitation, pursue long-term planning, and keep cleanliness and civic infrastructure at the core of the city’s development agenda.
