Nyokum festivities begin with cultural fervour

ITANAGAR, Feb 17: Nyokum Yullo, the major festival of the Nyishi community, commenced with a series of programmes, including inauguration of food stalls and the kick-off of games and sporting activities, on Tuesday afternoon.

The inaugural ceremony was held at Nyokum Lapang in Itanagar. The festival holds immense significance as it is celebrated by the Nyishi tribe, the largest among the 26 major tribes of Arunachal Pradesh.

Nyokum is an important annual agricultural festival, generally observed in February. The term “Nyok” means land, while “Kum” signifies togetherness, symbolising a community-centric celebration that seeks blessings for a bountiful harvest, prosperity, peace, and harmony.

The inauguration of the food stalls was witnessed by Taw Takar, Deputy Director of the Department of Indigenous Affairs, in the presence of IMC Corporator Gichik Tachu, Nangbia Sangnu, Lokam Sikio, leaders of the Nyokum Festival Celebration Committee, the Central Nyokum Festival Celebration Committee, local leaders, social workers, and members of the general public.

The celebrations are expected to continue with traditional rituals, cultural performances, sports events, and community feasts, reflecting the rich cultural heritage and unity of the Nyishi community.
