Daporijo, Feb 18: The Upper Subansiri District Administration, in collaboration with the Department of Information & Public Relations, organised a one-day awareness campaign on drug abuse at VKV Kuporijo under the Field & Press Publicity programme.
Inaugurating the week-long awareness initiative, Deputy Commissioner Tasso Gambo said drug abuse in Upper Subansiri has reached an alarming stage. He stressed that illegal consumption of drugs must be eradicated at the grassroots level at an early stage to safeguard future generations and civil society as a whole.
The DC urged stakeholders and community-based organisations to remain vigilant and promptly inform authorities about drug users and suppliers. He reiterated that the district administration follows a zero-tolerance policy and informed that an Action Committee has been constituted at the district level for strict enforcement.
Dakmin Giba, psychologist at the DMO Office, Daporijo, elaborated on legal and illegal drugs and their harmful effects. DACO Taw Ekke encouraged VKV students to become ambassadors of a drug-free campaign through creative means such as drama, poetry and social media outreach.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Dumporijo Police Station Jhony Kimsing presented a report on district drug cases and explained legal provisions and punishments under relevant laws. The Principal of VKV Kuporijo also addressed the gathering. Around 150 students actively participated in the programme.
