ITANAGAR, Mar 2: The body of a Public Works Department (PWD) official was found under mysterious circumstances at a bus stop shed along NH-415 near Hollongi on Monday morning, police said.
The deceased has been identified as Chungma Bagang, a resident of Doripu Bagang village in East Kameng district, who was serving as an Upper Division Clerk (UDC) in the Sagalee PWD Division.
According to Itanagar SP Jummar Basar, police received information at around 8 am about the discovery of a body at the bus stop near the garbage dumping point in the Hollongi area.
“The dead body of the victim was found in a hanged position, with his neck, hands and legs tied and bound to a post of the structure. Prima facie it looked like a murder case,” the SP said.
An FIR was lodged at Chimpu Police Station by the deceased’s son, Atung Bagang, under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. According to the FIR, Chungma Bagang had called his son on March 1 at around 7:04 pm, asking him to collect his car parked near RK Mission. During the call, he reportedly mentioned plans to travel to Assam with a friend but did not share further details.
“The circumstances in which the body was found and the area where the body was found, which does not have any mobile connection, makes the case very challenging,” SP Basar added.
The body was sent to the Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS), Naharlagun, for post-mortem examination and was later handed over to family members for the last rites.
Police said the investigation is being conducted by Sub-Inspector SK Jha, and further details are awaited.
