APIYO demands ouster of non-APST ZPM

ITANAGAR, Mar 11: The Arunachal Pradesh Indigenous youth Organisation (APIYO) has demanded immediate removal of Shyam Bahadur Chetry from the post of Zilla Parishad Member of Vijaynagar.

In this regard, the Org has written to the Chief Secretary.

“Vijayanagar is purely a scheduled tribe (ST) Assembly constituency. How can a non-APST person be allowed to participate in the Panchayati Raj election for the post of ZPM. This is in total violation of the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation Act of 1873,” said APIYO president Taro Sonam Liyak.

He was addressing reporters at the APC here today.

Expressing concern over allowing non APST to participate in the State Panchayat elections, Sonam said “this kind of act by the concerned district administration and MLA of the area is opening the way for non-APSTs to enter the State by violating the Regulation.”

He claimed that the indigenous people and student community of the area had expressed opposition to the matter but the local MLA and the district administration did not heed to their concern.

The association has warned of taking its own course of action if the government fails to respond to its demand.

Regarding its movement against Masjids and Madrasas, the APIYO chief informed that the land owner of Nirjuli Masjid is taking back the land after expiry of agreement with the Muslim community and the Nahalagun helipad Masjid/Madrasa land agreement also expired and the owner will be occupying the land.

About the weekly market, Sonam said the government has decided to only allow weekly markets on Saturdays, so that they can monitor entries of people.
