KHONSA, Mar 27: A major fire incident on Thursday night gutted two houses at Laho village under Dadam circle in Tirap district, causing extensive property loss and rendering two families homeless.
The fire, which broke out around 9:30 pm, reportedly originated from the residence of Tanwang Hakhun and quickly spread to a nearby house belonging to Wanghat Kamhua. The latter’s structure was under construction under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) as an MIB-type building.
Both houses were completely reduced to ashes, with families losing essential belongings, important documents, and traditional valuables including litto and litchap. In a bid to prevent the blaze from spreading further, a nearby house belonging to Photi Hakhun was dismantled as a precautionary measure.
Preliminary reports suggest that the fire may have been caused by an electrical short circuit. The incident has been registered at the local police station, and further investigation is underway, sources said.
Meanwhile, upon receiving the news, Khonsa West MLA Chakat Aboh promptly dispatched a relief team to the site, headed by public leader Pentom Kamhua, along with essential commodities and household items. She also assured that necessary construction materials, such as CGI sheets, will be provided in due course to assist the affected families in their rehabilitation.
