JEMEITHANG, Mar 31: The second edition of the Freedom Trail was flagged off on Tuesday, commemorating the historic entry of 14th Dalai Lama into India through Kenzamani in 1959—an event that continues to inspire generations with its message of courage, faith, and peace.
The six-day foot march retraces the sacred route from Kenzamani to Tawang and will culminate at Pungteng Tse on April 5. More than a trek, the Freedom Trail is envisioned as a tribute to resilience, unity, and the region’s rich spiritual heritage.
The day’s leg at Gorong Kukpa witnessed the presence of several dignitaries, including MLA Tsering Lhamu, Tawang ZPC Leki Gombu, the Abbot of Tawang Monastery, ADC (Lungla) Tashi Dhondup, along with officers of the Indian Army, Gaon Burahs, and PRI members from Jemeithang.
Addressing the gathering, MLA Tsering Lhamu highlighted the significance of the trail, stating that it retraces a path once taken under extraordinary circumstances, now symbolising unity, remembrance, and cultural pride. She warmly welcomed participants and noted that the journey would culminate at Pungteng Tse, where His Holiness had stayed upon entering India.
ZPC Leki Gombu, Vice Chairperson of DoKAA (Department of Karmik and Adhyatmik Affairs) Sange Chhodup, and other speakers also addressed the gathering, offering prayers for the long life and good health of His Holiness and urging people to imbibe his teachings of peace, compassion, and universal welfare.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Pema Khandu, recalling the historic significance of March 31, 1959, said the entry of His Holiness into India after a courageous and arduous journey across the Himalayas remains a defining moment. He noted that Arunachal Pradesh, particularly Tawang and Bomdila, served as a sacred passage during this journey, which continues to hold deep spiritual and historical importance.
Khandu further stated that the Freedom Trail, organised annually from March 31 to April 5, is not merely a trek but a tribute to peace, compassion, resilience, and the enduring human spirit. He said the initiative reinforces the values of harmony, unity, and coexistence while keeping alive the legacy of His Holiness.
The Freedom Trail 2026 stands as a powerful reminder of a historic journey transformed into a living legacy—one that continues to inspire unity, spiritual reflection, and collective hope for a peaceful world.
