Public Hearing for 680 MW Athunli Hydro Project conducted successfully

ANINI/ITANAGAR, Apr 1: The public hearing for the proposed 680 MW Athunli Hydro Electric Project, a statutory prerequisite for obtaining environmental clearance from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, was successfully conducted on Wednesday at Government Primary School, Athunli, in Dibang Valley district.

The hearing was organised by the Arunachal Pradesh Pollution Control Board, and chaired by Deputy Commissioner Bekir Nyorak. It witnessed active participation from local residents, stakeholders, and project affected families (PAFs), reflecting a spirit of collective engagement and informed dialogue.

During the proceedings, the project consultant presented a detailed overview of the project, highlighting its key features in line with the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Report and Environmental Management Plan (EMP). The presentation emphasised a balanced approach to development, integrating environmental safeguards with long-term socio-economic benefits.

The project affected families expressed strong support for the initiative and called for its timely implementation and early commissioning, officials said.

They further said that the successful conduct of the public hearing marks a significant milestone in the advancement of the Athunli Hydro Electric Project, envisioned as the third major hydropower initiative in Dibang Valley district.

The project is expected to contribute to regional development by boosting economic growth, creating employment opportunities, strengthening infrastructure, and generating clean and renewable energy.

Khandu hails public hearing, calls it step towards self-reliance

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein have expressed deep appreciation to the people of Dibang Valley and the Mishmi community for their unity, trust, and active participation in the public hearing for the 680 MW Athunli Hydro Electric Project. Khandu said the successful conduct of the public hearing marks a decisive step towards self-reliance and long-term prosperity for the region.

Highlighting the project’s importance, the Chief Minister noted that the Athunli project will be the third major hydropower initiative in Dibang Valley and is expected to play a transformative role in boosting the local economy. He said the project will generate employment opportunities, strengthen infrastructure, and contribute to clean and green energy production.

Echoing similar sentiments, Deputy CM Chowna Mein said the successful public hearing reflects the unity and forward-looking spirit of the people of Dibang Valley. He thanked residents, community leaders, and stakeholders for their active participation and valuable inputs, stating that their support is crucial for taking forward such transformative initiatives.

Describing the project as a major milestone, the Deputy Chief Minister said it will further strengthen regional growth, enhance livelihoods, and promote sustainable development. He added that the initiative aligns with the vision of building a self-reliant and prosperous Arunachal Pradesh through responsible harnessing of its hydropower potential.
