Demand for speedy probe, fast-track trial in the Yapi Potom murder case

ITANAGAR, Apr 10: The Kargu Kardi Welfare Society (KKWS) and the Lodu Ao Welfare Society (LAWS) have demanded the Police Department for expeditious investigation and fast-track trial of junior teacher Yapi Potom's murder case.

Addressing reporters at the Arunachal Press Club here on Friday, KKWS president Bajap Jilen urged the police to handle the case with utmost priority, sensitivity and diligence, ensuring timely delivery of justice.

Alleging that the accused, Daksen Riram, is a habitual offender with several reported and unreported cases, he called for a thorough background investigation.

The societies also sought adequate victim compensation for the bereaved family and special support for the two minor children of the deceased, including education, protection and psychological care. They further appealed for assistance to the elderly and ailing parents of the victim through appropriate welfare schemes.

Thousands join candlelight rally seeking justice for slain teacher 

Meanwhile, a massive candlelight vigil was held in Itanagar by the Arunachal Teachers’ Association (ATA), Itanagar Capital Region unit and it's central executive committee. The rally, which began at Akashdeep Complex and culminated at IG Park tennis court, saw large public participation, with people unitedly demanding justice for the slain junior teacher.

Participants holding candles, placards, and banners, raised slogans such as “Justice for Yapi Potom”, demanding exemplary punishment for the accused.

Addressing the gathering at IG Park, ATA president Kipa Kechak expressed deep grief over the killing, describing it as a devastating loss to the academic community. He said Potom, a junior teacher at Government Secondary School, Chimpu, was sincere, hardworking, and a mother of two, and her death has shocked the entire teaching fraternity. He demanded a fast-track investigation and trial, along with transparent updates on the case.

Echoing similar sentiments, Jamru Ruja, president of the All Nyishi Youth Association (ANYA), termed the incident deeply disturbing and called for the constitution of a fast-track court to ensure swift and exemplary punishment. He also urged the government to provide support, including possible employment assistance, to the bereaved family for the welfare of the victim’s children.

According to reports, the 42-year-old Potom was allegedly attacked with a dao near her residence in ESS Sector on April 7 by the accused, Daksen Riram, who later fled the spot. The incident sparked widespread shock and outrage among residents. Police has since arrested the accused and further investigation is underway.
