Bid to build drug-free community: ABAK initiates cannabis eradication drive in three East Siang villages

PASIGHAT, Apr 24: Stepping towards building a drug-free community in East Siang district, the Adi Ba:ne Ane Kebang (ABAK), East Siang District Unit in collaboration with the district police carried out a cannabis eradication drive across Seram, Kongkul and Namsing villages under Mebo sub-division on Thursday and Friday.

The drive was led by the ABAK team, with support from the Sub-Inspector of Mebo police station and his team, forest officials, Gaon Burahs, Gram Panchayat members, village secretaries, youth, and local villagers. During the operation, a large number of cannabis plants, consisting of both wild and cultivated areas, were destroyed.

Among the three villages, Namsing recorded the highest number of cannabis plants that got annihilated, while Kongkul reported comparatively fewer. In a show of unity, villagers from Kongkul also extended their support by assisting the team during the drive in Namsing.

Speaking on the occasion, ABAK-ESDU president Miti Megu Perme highlighted the harmful effects of cannabis and drug abuse on society. She stressed the importance of collective responsibility in building a drug-free community.

Post the operation, villagers from Seram, Kongkul, and Namsing expressed their appreciation for the initiative, initiated by the ABAK and assured the latter of their continued support in removing cannabis plants from the areas. They also reaffirmed their commitment to make the villages drug-free at the earliest possible.

In the meantime, the cannabis eradication drive will be conducted by the ABAK team at Ngopok, Kiyit & Borguli villages on Saturday.
