Yingkiong, Apr 24: In a continued effort to combat drug abuse, the Upper Siang District Police convened a meeting of the Narco Coordination Centre (NCORD) at the DC Office premises here on Friday under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner Talo Jerang.
The meeting reviewed actions taken by stakeholders and deliberated on key issues including network shadow zones affecting enforcement, voluntary destruction of opium cultivation, identification of beneficiaries under government schemes, and the need for intensified awareness campaigns.
Calling for a more coordinated and pragmatic approach, the DC stressed community involvement, particularly the role of women and Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in curbing drug abuse and trafficking.
Chairperson of Sikiing Kojee Charitable Society, Dr Mity Jopir, highlighted the importance of awareness programmes in schools and suggested monitoring private Sumo taxi operations to check drug supply routes. Mariyang ADC Nongkong Borang informed about steps taken for the voluntary destruction of poppy cultivation.
Earlier, Deputy Superintendent of Police Gocham Sakter briefed the members on objectives and challenges, including geo-tagging issues due to poor connectivity in Mopom circle affecting the proposed Geying outpost.
