Pangsau Pass Trade Study report submitted to Guv

ITANAGAR, May 2: Prof Mahendra P Lama, a distinguished development economist and Chair of the Pangsau Pass Trade Study Group (2022), called on Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt Gen (Retd) KT Parnaik at Lok Bhavan here on Saturday and submitted a comprehensive report on trade and connectivity through Pangsau Pass.

During the meeting, Prof Lama presented findings and policy recommendations of the Pangsau Pass Trade Study, commissioned by the Department of Industries, Trade and Commerce, Government of Arunachal Pradesh. Drawing on extensive field research and regional analysis, he highlighted the vast potential of reconnecting Arunachal Pradesh with Southeast Asian economies through historic trade routes such as Pangsau Pass.

He emphasized that improved connectivity, border trade facilitation, and infrastructure development could significantly boost livelihoods, entrepreneurship, and cross-border cooperation in the region.

Appreciating the study, Governor Parnaik said such evidence-based policy inputs are crucial for shaping the state’s growth trajectory. He noted that under the Government of India’s ‘Act East’ and the more proactive ‘Act Fast’ approach, Arunachal Pradesh is poised to emerge as a key gateway to Southeast Asia.

Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of the Northeast as “Ashtalakshmi,” the Governor said the region is increasingly being recognised as a driver of national growth and strategic engagement. He said that the resolve to Act East and Act Fast reflects India’s commitment to harness the full potential of this region.

At the same time, the Governor stressed that development initiatives in border areas must be balanced with security considerations. Sustainable progress, he said, should safeguard national interests while creating economic opportunities for local communities.

Sonyung Modi, Director of the Trade and Commerce Department, Government of Arunachal Pradesh, was also present during the meeting.

It may be recalled that Prof Lama also presented the Nathu La Trade Study Group report to the Governor, recalling his tenure as General Officer Commanding in Sikkim during the reopening of the historic Nathu La trade route.
