GST Bhawan inaugurated at Itanagar to boost taxpayer services

ITANAGAR, May 3: Surjit Bhujabal, Member (Compliance Management & Zonal Member) of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), on Sunday inaugurated the newly constructed GST Bhawan at Niti Vihar, Itanagar, marking a significant step towards strengthening taxpayer services in Arunachal Pradesh.

The inauguration ceremony was held in the presence of Kul Prakash Singh, Chief Commissioner of CGST & Central Excise, Guwahati Zone, and Shyam Kanu Mahanta, Commissioner of CGST & Central Excise, Itanagar.

The GST Bhawan, established as a modern office complex for the Itanagar Commissionerate under CBIC, is envisaged as a dedicated taxpayer facilitation centre aimed at improving service delivery, accessibility, and ease of compliance.

Addressing the gathering, Bhujabal congratulated the people of Arunachal Pradesh on the milestone and emphasized that the success of Goods and Services Tax lies in trust, voluntary compliance, and a collaborative partnership between taxpayers and the administration. He described the new facility as not just an office, but a centre for facilitation, dialogue, and mutual confidence.

Highlighting the State’s GST performance, he noted that revenue collection in Arunachal Pradesh reached Rs 526 crore during FY 2025–26, registering a growth of 29.4 percent over the previous year—among the highest in the country. He attributed this to improved compliance behaviour and increased trust in the GST system.

Kul Prakash Singh underscored that infrastructure development must translate into a better taxpayer experience, stressing the need for a cooperative compliance framework where taxpayers are guided and supported. He also noted that this is the third GST Bhawan in the Northeast, reflecting the Government’s focus on strengthening tax administration in the region.

Shyam Kanu Mahanta stated that the new facility would enhance accessibility and efficiency in taxpayer services. He highlighted the steady rise in registered taxpayers as a sign of growing trust and assured that regular outreach and awareness programmes would be conducted to promote voluntary compliance.

The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Papum Pare Deputy Commissioner and SGST Commissioner of Arunachal Pradesh, Lobsang Tsering, along with senior officials from CGST, Central Excise, and other departments.

The GST Bhawan is expected to play a key role in strengthening tax administration and fostering a more transparent, efficient, and taxpayer-friendly ecosystem in the state.
