MALIGAON, May 4: The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has achieved a significant milestone in infrastructural upgradation with the successful commissioning of a new major bridge No 7 on 3rd May, 2026.
The bridge has been constructed in the Chaparmukh-Senchoa section under Lumding Division along with a permanent track diversion. The new bridge consists of a configuration of Pre-stressed Concrete Slab & Open Web Girder representing a substantial engineering upgrade, which will replace the existing old bridge at the location.
The old bridge, originally a metre gauge structure later retained with strengthening, during the 1994 gauge conversion to broad gauge, had operational limitations and was subjected to a Permanent Speed Restriction (PSR) of 40 kmph. Recognizing the technicaldem and for modernization and enhanced safety, the division undertook the rebuilding work along with the construction of a permanent diversion alignment to facilitate smoother and safer train movement in the section.
The new bridge and diverted track were successfully connected to the existing running line at both ends through a well-coordinated cut-and-connection operation executed under a traffic block of approximately six hours. Despite the operational challenges, the work was completed efficiently and the section was commissioned for train movement on the same day, demonstrating high levels of planning, coordination and execution by the engineering and operating teams.
With the commissioning of this upgraded infrastructure, the earlier speed restriction of 40 kmph has been eliminated, resulting in improved operational efficiency, enhanced safety and smoother train operations in the section. This accomplishment underscores NFR’s continued commitment towards strengthening rail infrastructure and ensuring reliable services for passengers and freight movement in the zone.
