Arunachal achieves milestone in cardiac care with first advanced PTCA procedure at TRIHMS

Itanagar, May 11: Chief Minister Pema Khandu has congratulated the Department of Cardiology at Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS) for successfully performing Arunachal Pradesh’s first Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA) with Intravascular Lithotripsy (IVL) on a patient suffering from complex Triple Vessel Coronary Artery Disease with heavy calcium deposition.

The groundbreaking procedure was carried out on a 62-year-old patient who had initially been advised to undergo Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG). However, after consultation with cardiothoracic and vascular surgeons, the patient opted for PTCA with IVL and chose to undergo the advanced treatment within the state.

While routine angioplasty procedures are regularly performed at TRIHMS, with over 1,000 successful cases completed so far, officials described this as a rare and highly complex intervention — the first of its kind in Arunachal Pradesh.

The successful use of Intravascular Lithotripsy technology marks a significant milestone in the advancement of cardiac healthcare services in the state, enabling treatment of heavily calcified coronary arteries through minimally invasive techniques.

Commending the achievement, CM Khandu praised the team of cardiologists, surgeons, doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals for their dedication and expertise in elevating healthcare standards in Arunachal Pradesh.

He stated that the development reflects a growing reverse trend, with patients increasingly opting for advanced medical treatment within the state instead of travelling outside for specialised healthcare services.
