PASIGHAT, May 16: In a significant initiative aimed at preserving and promoting the cultural identity of Adi women, the Adi Baane Ane Kebang (ABAK) on Saturday launched ‘Banné Nog-ying’, a specially designed traditional bead garland for Adi womenfolk, during a ceremony held at IGJ Govt Higher Secondary School in Pasighat.
The ornament has been introduced on the lines of ‘Dudab’, the traditional symbolic ornament worn by Adi men, with the objective of creating a distinct cultural identity for Adi women and encouraging younger generations to remain connected with their roots and traditions.
The launching programme was attended by Pasighat East MLA Tapi Darang, Central Donyi-Polo Yelam Kebang (CDPYK) president Dr Tajom Tasung and East Siang ZPC Ruth Tabing Boko, who lauded the efforts of ABAK leaders led by president Yamek Mize Taggu, general secretary Opung Jamoh Dai and vice-president Oming Jamoh Pertin.
Addressing the gathering, MLA Tapi Darang said that Banné Nog-ying would help strengthen the cultural identity of Adi women in the same way Dudab symbolizes Adi menfolk. Dr Tajom Tasung termed the initiative a commendable step towards preserving the rich traditions and heritage of the Adi tribe.
Speaking on the occasion, ZPC Ruth Tabing Boko noted that Adi women have traditionally adorned ornaments such as Nog, Sondorong, Maduli, Tampilang and Sumbi, and expressed hope that Banné Nog-ying would gain popularity among unmarried Adi women, symbolizing dignity and identity.
According to the organizers, Banné Nog-ying is a recreated form of the traditional Nog ornament, designed with a modern touch while retaining its cultural significance. The concept was developed by Opung Jamoh Dai, crafted by Yato Jamoh Nobeng and named by Maktel Pertin, a Head Gaon Burah of Dambuk in Lower Dibang Valley district.
The organizers stated that the initiative seeks to honour women and distinguished female guests with pride and respect, while strengthening cultural awareness and unity within the Adi community. Courtesy – Maksam Tayeng
