Itanagar, May 16: The mortal remains of noted indigenous leader, social reformer and educationist Dr Bengia Tolum were laid to rest at his residential compound at Yazali in Keyi Panyor district on Saturday amid an outpouring of grief and tributes from across Arunachal Pradesh.
Dr Tolum passed away on Thursday at Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS) following a prolonged illness. He was 69 and is survived by his wife, five sons, including senior journalist Bengia Ajum, and a daughter.
Paying his last respects to the late leader at Yazali, Chief Minister Pema Khandu described Dr Tolum as a towering indigenous leader whose immense contributions towards society and preservation of indigenous identity would always be remembered with deep respect and gratitude. He prayed for eternal peace and a swift rebirth for the departed soul.
Former Chief Minister Nabam Tuki, while paying floral tributes, recalled Dr Tolum’s immense contributions as founding president of the Arunachal Indigenous Tribes Forum (AITF) and six-time former president of the Nyishi Elite Society (NES). He said Dr Tolum played a pivotal role in uniting indigenous tribes and working tirelessly for the welfare and upliftment of society.
BJP State President Kaling Moyong also offered homage, stating that Dr Tolum devoted his life to the service of society and the preservation of cultural roots, leaving behind a remarkable legacy for future generations.
Members of the Arunachal Press Club (APC) and the Arunachal Pradesh Union of Working Journalists (APUWJ) also attended the funeral service and paid homage to the late leader.
APC president Amar Sangno described Dr Tolum’s demise as an irreparable loss not only to the Nyishi community but to the entire state. He said Dr Tolum was a guardian of indigenous heritage and a compassionate leader devoted to uplifting society.
“Dr Bengia Tolum was not merely a community leader, but also a bridge-builder, a guardian of indigenous heritage, and a compassionate human being whose life was devoted to uplifting society. His passing has created a void that will be difficult to fill,” Sangno said.
APUWJ president Dodum Yangfo, general secretary Sonam Jelly, APC general secretary Damien Lepcha, members of the Ziro Press Club and journalists from across the state were present during the funeral service.
Dr Bengia Tolum is widely remembered for his lifelong efforts towards preservation of indigenous culture, social harmony, education and community welfare in Arunachal Pradesh.
