PASIGHAT, Jun 3: The College of Horticulture and Forestry (CHF) and Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Pasighat, jointly organized a one-day awareness programme on “Sustainable Soil Health Management through the Growing of Green Manuring Crops” under the theme “Khet Bachao Abhiyan-2026.”
The programme, funded by the ICAR–National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (NBPGR) under the All India Coordinated Research Network (AICRN) on Potential Crops through the NEH/TSP component, was participated by 29 farmers from East Siang district.
The programme was inaugurated by the CHF Dean Prof L Wangchu, in the presence of Dr Brijendra Singh Rajawat of KVK East Siang, and Prof A Herojit Singh.
Prof P Debnath, PI of the projects, provided a detailed overview of green manuring crops and highlighted their role in sustainable soil health management under potential crops for hill farmers of Arunachal Pradesh. He also elaborated on the scientific package of practices for cultivating various green manuring crops in the state.
Dr L Wangchu outlined the objectives of the programme and stressed the need for adopting organic cultivation and natural farming practices for maintaining soil fertility. He urged farmers to minimize the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides and adopt environmentally sustainable farming methods.
Prof A Herojit Singh delivered a lecture on importance of growing of green manuring crops for sustainable soil fertility management in organic farming and natural farming.
As part of the programme, farmers were taken on a field visit to the green manuring crop demonstration plots maintained under the AICRN on Potential Crops experimental unit. The field visit was conducted by Dr Toge Riba, Subject Matter Specialist, KVK East Siang, who explained the cultivation practices and benefits of different green manuring crops.
