Itanagar, Jun 4: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has nominated senior party leader Tai Tagak as its candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha election from Arunachal Pradesh.

The election to the Council of States is being held to fill the seat currently represented by Rajya Sabha member Nabam Rebia, whose term is scheduled to end on June 23, 2026.

The announcement was welcomed by senior BJP leader and Chief Minister Pema Khandu, who congratulated Tagak on being chosen as the BJP nominee and described the nomination as recognition of his decades-long commitment to the party and its ideology.

“His nomination is a fitting recognition of decades of unwavering commitment to the organisation and its ideals. He stood firm during difficult times, when many hesitated to be associated with the BJP, and worked tirelessly at the grassroots level to strengthen the party across the state,” Khandu said in a social media post.

He said the honour reflects Tagak’s loyalty, perseverance and dedication to the party’s cause and expressed confidence that he would effectively represent the interests of Arunachal Pradesh in the Rajya Sabha.

The Arunachal Pradesh unit of BJP also extended its warm congratulations to Tagak, praising his dedication and service to the party.

In a statement, the BJP said Tagak’s unwavering dedication, loyalty, tireless efforts and long-standing contribution to the party had earned him the well-deserved opportunity to represent the state in Parliament’s Upper House.

Party leaders and workers across the state have welcomed the decision, expressing confidence that Tagak’s extensive organisational experience and grassroots connect will strengthen Arunachal Pradesh’s voice in the Rajya Sabha.

With the BJP enjoying a comfortable majority in the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly, Tagak’s election to the Upper House is expected to be a formality.

In the 60-member Assembly, the ruling BJP has 46 MLAs, while the state’s regional outfit People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA) has six members, followed by three from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), one each from the Congress and National People’s Party (NPP), and three Independents.
