ITANAGAR, Jun 6: World Environment Day was observed across Arunachal Pradesh with plantation drives, awareness programmes, cleanliness campaigns and community outreach activities, reflecting a growing commitment towards environmental conservation and sustainable development.
At NERIST, Nirjuli, the 1 Arunachal Pradesh Battalion NCC, Naharlagun, in collaboration with the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI), Arunachal Pradesh Regional Centre, celebrated the occasion during the Combined Annual Training Camp (CATC)-37. Around 340 NCC cadets participated in a series of activities, including expert lectures on biodiversity and wildlife conservation, an environmental quiz, speech competition, awareness rally, Mission LiFE pledge, environmental protection pledge and the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” plantation drive.
The programme was conducted by a ZSI team led by Dr Shantabala Devi Gurumayum and Dr Vikram Delu, who highlighted the importance of biodiversity conservation and sustainable environmental practices. The event was held under the leadership of Commanding Officer Col Samudra Vijay Sharma, with support from NCC officers and associate NCC officers.
In Naharlagun, the Nature Welfare Council organised a mass tree plantation programme at Government Middle School, Damsite, under the theme “Mera Ped, Meri Pehchan.” Addressing the gathering, Council Chairman Tarh Achak informed the organisation’s target of planting five lakh saplings across Arunachal Pradesh as part of its environmental conservation initiative.
He urged citizens to actively participate in protecting nature and warned against indiscriminate felling of trees, stating that deforestation could lead to serious ecological challenges, including water scarcity and environmental imbalance. Participants pledged to contribute towards building a greener and more sustainable Arunachal Pradesh.
Meanwhile, at Nacho in Upper Subansiri district, World Environment Day was observed with a mass plantation drive and cleanliness campaign at the Community Health Centre (CHC), Nacho. The programme witnessed active participation from Panchayat leaders, villagers, medical officials and local residents.
Saplings were planted within the CHC premises, while volunteers undertook a cleanliness drive to promote a healthy and sustainable environment. Speakers emphasized the importance of collective action in environmental conservation and maintaining cleanliness in public spaces.
