IMD issues red alert for five Arunachal dists, warns of extremely heavy rainfall

Itanagar, Jun 28: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for five Arunachal Pradesh districts – Lower Subansiri, Leparada, Lower Siang, Papum Pare and East Siang, forecasting thunderstorms, lightning and extremely heavy rainfall from June 28 to 29.

According to the Department of Disaster Management, Orange Alerts have also been issued for West Kameng, Pakke-Kessang, East Kameng, Kamle and Lower Dibang Valley districts during the same period.

Further, an Orange Alert has been issued for West Kameng, Lower Subansiri, East Siang, Papum Pare, Leparada, Lower Siang and Lower Dibang Valley districts from June 29 to 30, warning of thunderstorms accompanied by extremely heavy rainfall.

IMD officials have warned that parts of the state may receive more than 200 mm of rainfall within the next 24 hours, significantly increasing the risk of landslides, flash floods, waterlogging, damage to infrastructure and disruption of road connectivity and essential services.

In a separate advisory, the IMD stated that moderate rainfall accompanied by light thunderstorms and lightning is likely to occur at a few places in Bichom, East Kameng, Kamle, Lower Dibang Valley, Pakke-Kessang and West Kameng districts over the next 24 hours.

The Department of Disaster Management has urged district administrations and all concerned authorities to remain on high alert and take necessary precautionary measures to safeguard lives and property.

Residents, particularly those living in flood- and landslide-prone areas, have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, refrain from venturing near rivers and streams, and strictly follow advisories issued by the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) and respective District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs).

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have appealed to the public to stay informed through official weather updates and emergency advisories.
