SSB personnel avert major forest fire near NIMAS

DIRANG, Jun 28: A major forest fire that broke out near the National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports (NIMAS) and Kendriya Vidyalaya, Dirang, was successfully brought under control by personnel of the 30 Battalion, Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), preventing potential damage to residential areas and public property.

According to officials, the fire started at around 2:30 pm on Saturday and spread across nearly 300 metres of forest area, posing a threat to nearby houses, including the Jyoti Nagar residential complex of the 30 Bn SSB.

Upon receiving information, the battalion's Rapid Response Team (RRT) and other personnel rushed to the site and launched immediate firefighting and rescue operations. Their prompt action helped contain the blaze before it could spread further.

Officials said the timely intervention prevented the fire from reaching residential settlements and averted a major loss of life and property. No casualties or injuries were reported. The incident highlighted the preparedness and commitment of the SSB in responding to emergencies and safeguarding local communities.

DDMA issues advisory

Meanwhile, the West Kameng District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) issued a public advisory following forecasts of thunderstorms, lightning and heavy rainfall across the district from June 28 to 30.

Based on the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast, residents have been advised to avoid landslide-prone areas, riverbanks, nallahs, sinking zones and other vulnerable locations during the period. The authorities also cautioned people against venturing into rivers and streams for fishing, hunting or other activities.

The advisory urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly during night hours, and remain updated through official weather bulletins. People have been asked to keep emergency supplies such as first-aid kits, medicines, drinking water, dry rations, torches, charged mobile phones and important documents readily accessible.

DDMA further advised the public to remain calm, avoid rumours and refrain from outdoor activities during severe weather conditions. Residents have also been urged to clear drains and remove debris to prevent waterlogging.

Meanwhile, all administrative officers, disaster management officials and field functionaries have been directed to maintain round-the-clock vigilance and promptly report any emergency to the District Administration and District Emergency Operations Centre.

The administration appealed to citizens to strictly follow the advisory and cooperate with authorities to ensure safety during the anticipated adverse weather conditions.
