Khet Bachao Abhiyan reaches 17 villages, promotes sustainable farming in L/Subansiri

ZIRO, Jun 30: A month-long campaign promoting sustainable and natural farming practices concluded successfully in Lower Subansiri district, reaching hundreds of farmers across 17 villages under the nationwide Khet Bachao Abhiyan.

The initiative, implemented under the guidance of Deputy Commissioner Oli Perme, focused on reducing dependence on chemical inputs and encouraging environmentally sustainable agricultural practices.

Throughout June, teams led by District Agriculture Officer Tasso Butung worked closely with farming communities to assess soil health and promote alternatives such as vermicomposting, green manuring and water conservation techniques.

Agricultural experts from Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Yachuli conducted practical demonstrations and awareness programmes aimed at helping farmers transition towards natural farming under the Government of India's National Mission on Natural Farming.

More than 600 farmers participated in the campaign and received guidance on sustainable cultivation methods designed to improve soil fertility, reduce production costs and enhance long-term agricultural productivity.

The programme also saw active participation from PRI members, Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), officials from NABARD, the State Bank of India and the Lead District Manager's office. Farmers were sensitised about government support schemes, improved seed varieties, water-efficient farming techniques, PM-Kisan benefits and Kisan Credit Cards.

Officials said the campaign sought to blend traditional agricultural wisdom with modern scientific practices to ensure long-term sustainability and livelihood security for farming communities.

As the campaign concluded, district authorities expressed optimism that the awareness generated during the month-long outreach would encourage wider adoption of sustainable farming practices and contribute to a healthier agricultural ecosystem in Lower Subansiri. (DIPRO)
