Daporijo, Jul 3: The Upper Subansiri District Administration and the District Police busted an illegal gambling racket during a surprise enforcement drive conducted across Daporijo township on Thursday evening.
The operation also included inspections of hotels, lodges, bars and business establishments, along with naka checking at strategic locations to strengthen law enforcement and road safety.
The drive was conducted under the guidance of Deputy Commissioner Tasso Gambo and Superintendent of Police Pawan Kumar Yadav. The joint enforcement team was led by Town Magistrate Deewan Mara and DySP (HQ) Lukchi Kamcham. The police team was headed by Officer-in-Charge of Daporijo Police Station SI Lige, assisted by SI PT Tamin and other police personnel.
During the inspections, officials verified hotel guest registers, checked the identities of occupants and inspected rooms to ensure compliance with legal provisions. The exercise was aimed at curbing immoral activities, illegal gambling and other unlawful practices that could disturb public peace and order.
Several individuals were found engaged in illegal gambling during the operation. Police seized gambling materials along with cash after following due legal procedures. A regular case has been registered at Daporijo Police Station, and further investigation is underway to identify the involvement of other persons.
The administration directed hotel and business owners to maintain proper guest records, verify the identity of every visitor and immediately report any suspicious activities to the police or district authorities. They were warned that establishments found facilitating or sheltering illegal activities would face strict legal action under the law.
As part of the enforcement drive, joint naka checking points were established across key locations in the Daporijo township with the support of the District Police Traffic Branch. The checks focused on preventing drunken driving and riding, enforcing traffic regulations and improving road safety. (DIPRO)
