ITANAGAR, Jul 3: Residents of Gensi and Sibe circles in Lower Siang district staged a peaceful demonstration opposing the installation of smart electricity meters, alleging that the new meters have resulted in higher electricity bills.
The protest witnessed participation from villagers, community leaders, women, youths and elected representatives, who urged the government and the Power Department to suspend the rollout until public concerns are adequately addressed.
The protesters demanded greater transparency and meaningful consultations with local residents before further installations are carried out. They also appealed to the government to safeguard consumer interests while implementing power sector reforms.
The demonstration remained peaceful, with participants reiterating their demand that smart meter installations be halted until their grievances are resolved.
