Meaningful youth engagement key to building police-community trust, says SP Pankaj Lamba

PASIGHAT, Jul 10: East Siang Superintendent of Police (SP) Pankaj Lamba has said meaningful engagement with young people is essential for building trust between the police and the community, as the District Police concluded a three-week Police Internship Programme for students of Jawaharlal Nehru College (JNC), Pasighat.

Organised in collaboration with JNC, the internship was conducted from June 16 to July 6 and provided 42 students with first-hand exposure to the functioning of the police and the criminal justice system. The initiative aimed to promote legal awareness, transparency, civic responsibility and stronger police-public relations.

The programme also complemented the East Siang District Police's ongoing "Know Your Police Station: Youth Engagement Programme," which seeks to strengthen interaction between the police and the youth through experiential learning.

During the internship, the students gained practical knowledge of police station functioning, including registration of FIRs, investigation procedures, maintenance of police records and the use of the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS). They also interacted with investigating officers and other police personnel to understand the role of the police in maintaining law and order, crime prevention, investigation and public service delivery.

The interns attended interactive sessions on road safety, traffic management, disaster preparedness, fire safety, CPR and first aid, women and child protection laws, victim-centric policing and the functioning of the Women Police Station.

The programme also featured demonstrations by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and Fire and Emergency Services Department, providing participants with practical exposure to emergency response, rescue operations and disaster management.

As part of the internship, the students visited various branches of the SP Office, including the Establishment, Accounts and Wireless branches, where they were introduced to police administration, financial management, communication systems and the use of modern technology in policing.

Speaking on the successful completion of the programme, SP Pankaj Lamba said initiatives such as the Police Internship Programme and the "Know Your Police Station" campaign help young citizens gain a deeper understanding of policing, encourage responsible citizenship and inspire greater public participation in building a safe, secure and law-abiding society.

The District Police expressed gratitude to the JNC principal, faculty members and students for their enthusiastic participation and support, and reaffirmed its commitment to organising similar programmes in the future to strengthen police-public partnerships and promote community-oriented policing.
