AAPYO urges Govt to enact law against fake social media accounts

Itanagar, Aug 3: The All Arunachal Pradesh Youth Organization (AAPYO) has urged the State Government to consider bringing in legislation to curb the misuse of fake social media accounts for defamation, cyber harassment, impersonation and the spread of false information.

In a memorandum submitted to Chief Minister Pema Khandu, the Organisation said that while the Constitution guarantees freedom of speech and expression, such rights do not extend to unlawful acts such as defamation, criminal intimidation, cyber harassment, impersonation or the deliberate dissemination of misinformation.

AAPYO stressed the need to strengthen the legal framework to deter such offences while safeguarding legitimate freedom of expression.

The Organisation urged the government to constitute an expert committee to examine the growing misuse of fake social media accounts in the state and assess the feasibility of introducing suitable legislation or amendments consistent with the Constitution and existing central laws.

It also called for strengthening cybercrime investigation infrastructure and public grievance redressal mechanisms, besides launching awareness campaigns to promote responsible and lawful use of social media.
