PASIGHAT, Aug 8: Amid the devastating floods affecting several parts of Assam, Headquarters Chief Engineer (Project) Brahmank of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has extended a helping hand to flood-affected families by organising a voluntary relief assistance campaign.
The initiative, led by Chief Engineer Pankaj Goyal, saw GREF officers, personnel and their families contribute funds and essential relief materials for people affected by the floods.
The relief materials included rice, food items, clothing, footwear, blankets and other daily-use necessities. The collected materials were assembled at HQ CE (P) Brahmank in Pasighat and dispatched to Dibrugarh on August 4. They were subsequently handed over to the Rotary Club of Dibrugarh for distribution among flood-affected families.
The floods have caused widespread damage to lives, livelihoods and infrastructure across several districts of Assam, including Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, Golaghat, Dhemaji, Sonitpur and Bajali. Several villages have been inundated, while roads, embankments and agricultural lands have suffered extensive damage.
Rivers such as the Dikhow and Dhansiri (South) have reportedly crossed danger levels in several areas, forcing residents to move to safer locations and relief camps. Floodwaters have also disrupted drinking water supply, electricity, healthcare and transportation, while farmers have suffered losses to crops, livestock and agricultural land.
The relief initiative reflects the BRO's ethos of “service beyond duty” and its commitment to supporting communities during times of crisis. Known for developing and maintaining vital roads, bridges and other infrastructure in some of the country's most difficult terrains, BRO personnel have once again demonstrated their spirit of humanitarian service.
The voluntary contribution by Project Brahmank personnel underscores the values of compassion, solidarity and national responsibility, highlighting the importance of collective efforts in providing timely assistance to people affected by natural disasters.
As Assam continues to deal with the aftermath of the floods, the initiative serves as a reminder that nation-building goes beyond infrastructure development and also involves standing in solidarity with fellow citizens during times of adversity.
