PASIGHAT, Aug 12: Pasighat observed National Librarians’ Day on Wednesday to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr S R Ranganathan, widely regarded as the father of library science in India. The programme was organized at the District Library, Pasighat, with students, teachers and library staff participating in it.
Addressing the gathering, Assistant Director Public Library Victoria Borang highlighted Dr Ranganathan’s immense contribution to the development of library science in India and stressed the importance of developing good reading habits among students.
Dr. Ranganathan, whose birth anniversary is observed on August 12 every year, was a brilliant mathematician who later devoted himself to the field of library science. His contribution transformed the way books are organized, preserved and made accessible to readers.
Borang also encouraged students to maintain discipline while using the library. She explained that students should handle books carefully, read them properly and return them to their designated places after use. She said such habits help maintain the library and make books accessible to other readers.
Sharing a message on life and perseverance, she said that life may not always go according to one’s expectations, but people should not become discouraged. With hard work, commitment and sincerity, one can achieve positive results. She further emphasized that sincerity, discipline and obedience are important qualities for students to succeed in life.
Speaking about the resources available at the District Library, Kaling Borang said that the library has a wide range of reading materials for different age groups and interests. English and Hindi books, poetry collections and children’s books are available for readers.
A poem recitation competition was also organized, as part of the celebration for students of Shree Shree Vidya Mandir School, Pasighat. The winners were Lenjina Melchi Tamin (first), Gidi Apang (second), and Reena Galing (third).
