ICR Police seizes 6.39 kg cannabis, suspected heroin; three arrested

Itanagar, Aug 20: In two separate operations, police in the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR) have seized a total of 6.39 kg of suspected cannabis and over 14 grams of suspected heroin, arresting three persons in connection with alleged narcotics offences, a senior officer said on Thursday.

In the first operation, Naharlagun Police intercepted 22-year-old Tachung Beyong at Boda Namchi, Nirjuli, at around 5:42 pm on Wednesday. During his personal search, police recovered 34 grams of suspected cannabis packed in three packets.

A search of his scooter led to the recovery of another 910 grams of suspected cannabis in 74 packets, while a subsequent search of his rented accommodation resulted in the recovery of 5.446 kg of the suspected contraband. Police also seized Rs 27,400 in cash.

The operation was carried out by a team led by Naharlagun Police Station OC Inspector Krishnendu Dev under the supervision of ASP Rishi Longdo, SDPO Naharlagun.

A case has been registered under Sections 20(b)(ii)(B) and 29 of the NDPS Act. Tachung Beyong, a resident of Pakke Camp, Bameng, East Kameng district, has been arrested.

In a separate operation later the same evening, Banderdewa Police intercepted a Maruti S-Presso bearing registration number AR-01S-6057 at the Banderdewa Check Gate at around 7:20 pm, acting on information about suspected narcotics being transported towards Arunachal Pradesh.

Two occupants of the vehicle, identified as Yorum Soku (24) and Nikja Kaya (24), were arrested after police recovered 12 vials containing orange-coloured powdery substance suspected to be heroin. The total weight, including the vials, was reported to be 14.84 grams.

The operation was conducted by a team led by Banderdewa Police Station OC Inspector Kipa Hamak. A case has been registered under Sections 21(b), 27(A) and 29 of the NDPS Act.

Soku, a resident of Aniya Colony, Nirjuli, and Kaya, an inhabitant of Koloriang, Kurung Kumey district, have been arrested in the case.

Meanwhile, Naharlagun SP Dr Nyelam Nega reiterated the Arunachal Pradesh Police’s commitment to combating the drug menace and appealed to the public to extend active cooperation in building a drug-free society.
