Itanagar, Aug 20: Arunachal Pradesh Transport Minister Ojing Tasing on Thursday reiterated the state's commitment to reducing road fatalities by 50 per cent by 2030 and called for coordinated, district-specific and evidence-based interventions to tackle the growing road safety challenge.
Tasing, who attended a workshop on the Preparation of District Road Safety Action Plans in New Delhi, asked the district administrations to work closely with the Transportation Research and Injury Prevention Centre (TRIPC) of IIT Delhi to develop effective interventions suited to local conditions.
The State Transport Department has recently collaborated with IIT Delhi for preparing road safety action plans for three high-fatality areas - the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR), East Siang and Namsai, an official statement informed here.
The initiative aims to develop evidence-based and location-specific measures to reduce road deaths and serious injuries in line with the mandate of the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety.
State Transport Commissioner Saugat Biswas, in his address, said the state needed to move beyond aggregate crash figures and focus on identifying localised risks, prioritising interventions and clearly defining institutional responsibilities.
He said TRIPC-IIT Delhi would organise capacity-building and sensitisation workshops for senior officers and other stakeholders at the state and district levels.
The inception workshop, held at the IIT campus, brought together officials of the state government, district administrations, police and health departments, road-owning agencies and national road safety experts. (PTI)
