Lokpeng celebrates Solung Gii:di 2026 with enthusiasm and traditional fervour

LOKPENG, Aug 22: The Lokpeng Solung Gii:di Celebration 2026 was conducted with great enthusiasm and traditional fervour at Lokpeng village, bringing together community members, cultural leaders, elected representatives and senior government officials to showcase the rich cultural heritage of the Adi community.

The grand celebration, which commenced on August 17, witnessed the participation of several prominent dignitaries, making it a significant cultural gathering in the region.

Ojing Tasing, Minister for Rural Development & Panchayati Raj, graced the occasion as chief guest, while Tajing Jonnom, Director Panchayati Raj (GoAP), attended as guest of honour.

Dr Tatum Mibang, Associate Professor, spoke on the significance of preserving the community’s rich cultural heritage.

The celebration provided a vibrant platform for the community to showcase its traditional customs, rituals, dances and chants. One of the major cultural highlights was the participation of Tajer Tamut of Jomo village, who served as the Solung Ponung Miri and led the traditional Ponung performances, adding cultural richness and grandeur to the festivities.

The presence of senior dignitaries, elected representatives and community leaders further underscored the importance of preserving indigenous traditions and passing the rich cultural legacy of the Adi community on to younger generations.

The festival was organised under the leadership of the Lokpeng Solung Gii:di Celebration Committee (LSGCC-2026), with Talem Saroh (president), and Tamur Pajing (general Secretary).

The celebration not only provided an opportunity for the community to come together in a spirit of unity and cultural pride but also reaffirmed its collective commitment to safeguarding, promoting and transmitting its age-old cultural traditions to future generations. (Courtesy Litem Eshi)
