ITANAGAR, Aug 23: In a momentous moment for Arunachal Pradesh, Nyeman Wangsu has become the first Wushu athlete from the State to qualify for the Asian Games twice, and hope is pinned on her that she makes it count this time in the 2026 Asian Games in Japan after being unable to contest in the last Asiad, held in China.
Nyeman will be a part of the Indian contingent which will take part in the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan scheduled from September 19 to October 24.
Elated over the athlete’s historic feat, Chief Minister Pema Khandu has congratulated her and also wished all success in her endeavour.
In a social media post, Khandu said: Warmest Congratulations and Best Wishes to Miss Nyeman Wangsu for the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. Arunachal is Proud. India is Proud!
Miss Nyeman Wangsu earns her place in Team India for Wushu at the 20th Asian Games 2026 in Japan.”
He went on to add: “This achievement is a testament to your courage, commitment and the countless hours of training behind the scenes. May you fight with strength, compete with confidence and create a moment to remember.”
Further, the CM wished her: “Wishing you the very best, Nyeman. Make Arunachal proud. Make India proud!”
Earlier, Nyeman earned her place in the Indian contingent for the 2022 Asian Games, the 19th Asian Games, which took place from September 23 to October 8, 2023, in Hangzhou, China. It was postponed from 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, she unfortunately could not compete because of the stapled-visa issue. These setbacks, however, did not diminish her determination. Instead, they strengthened her resolve to continue her journey towards representing India at the highest level of Asian sport.
With renewed determination, sustained training and remarkable perseverance, Nyeman has once again achieved what is a historic accomplishment for Arunachal Pradesh. She has qualified to represent India at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in Japan, thereby becoming the first Wushu athlete from Arunachal Pradesh to qualify for the Asian Games twice in succession.
Nyeman, who hails from Kanubari in Longding district, began her Wushu training in 2013 under the guidance of Coach Maibam Premchandra Singh. From her early years of training to reaching the international stage, her journey has been marked by exceptional dedication, discipline, perseverance and an unwavering commitment to sporting excellence.
Meanwhile, the All Arunachal Pradesh Wushu Association (AAPWA) takes immense pride in congratulating Nyeman Wangsu, a distinguished Wushu athlete from Kanubari, Longding district, Arunachal Pradesh, on achieving a historic milestone by becoming the first Wushu athlete from Arunachal Pradesh to qualify for the Asian Games on two consecutive occasions.
AAPWA firmly believes that an athlete’s success is the result of collective effort involving the athlete, coach, family, Association and the wider sporting ecosystem. The Association therefore remains committed to creating a supportive and coordinated environment for State’s Wushu athletes to pursue excellence at the national and international levels.

Her journey from Kanubari, Longding district, Arunachal Pradesh to the international sporting arena stands as an inspiration to aspiring athletes across the State, particularly young sportspersons from rural and remote areas.
