ITANAGAR, Aug 31: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has highlighted the importance of merit-based recruitment reforms in transforming the state’s government employment system and promoting a healthy competitive spirit among the youth.
Reflecting on the changes in the recruitment process, Khandu said there was a time when government jobs were allegedly used as promises during elections and recruitment lacked a formal, merit-based system.
“Then came APSSB. APPSC was reformed. Merit started to matter,” the Chief Minister said, referring to the establishment of the Arunachal Pradesh Staff Selection Board (APSSB) and reforms in the Arunachal Pradesh Public Service Commission (APPSC).
He said the changes were also reflected in the 2019 and 2024 elections, which, according to him, witnessed a departure from the earlier practice of job-for-vote politics.
Khandu said merit-based recruitment has “changed the game” by creating a healthier competitive environment among the state’s youth.
“The result? A more capable, professional and quality workforce in government,” he said.
The Chief Minister said such administrative reforms may not always attract the biggest headlines but would have a significant long-term impact on the youth, democratic processes and the quality of governance in Arunachal Pradesh.
He said the benefits of these reforms would be felt by future generations, as a transparent and merit-based recruitment system strengthens both public institutions and public confidence in government.
