NAMSAI, Sep 11: Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein has stressed for intensified shared efforts for protection of rivers, biodiversity and cultural heritage of the region.
The Dy CM stressed this today while joining the second edition of Nadi Utsav, an initiative dedicated to the conservation of rivers, aquatic flora and fauna, and the rich biodiversity that sustains the region’s natural ecosystems.
Speaking on the occasion, Mein emphasized that rivers and streams are not merely sources of water but living ecosystems that support diverse forms of life and are deeply connected with the region’s history, culture and traditions. He added that the lifestyles of our tribal people are deeply associated with nature and we have lived with nature for ages, therefore efforts must be on to protect and conserve the water and forest.
He called for collective efforts towards the conservation of biodiversity, prevention of illegal fishing and hunting, and rejuvenation of water bodies.
Describing Nadi Utsav as a humble beginning, the Dy CM said the initiative reflects the vision and guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi towards rejuvenating and strengthening our ecosystems. He expressed confidence that with greater public participation, Nadi Utsav would be expanded and organized on a much larger scale in the coming years.
The culmination of the festival at TaKonmu, also known as Tungnamphi at Noichenam (Tengapani), holds deep cultural and historical significance. The sacred site has long been associated with the Tai Khamti community, serving as a place of worship and prayer, as well as an important historic route for trade and barter with Sadiya.
Moreover, the Dy CM stressed that conservation efforts must go beyond protecting the natural environment and must also encompass the preservation of the cultural heritage, traditions and historical connections that have evolved alongside the region’s rivers and waterways.
He urged all stakeholders and the people to work together towards safeguarding the region’s rivers, aquatic biodiversity and cultural heritage for future generations.
The event was also attended by ZPC Namsai Chau Sujana Namchoom, DC Namsai Lobsang Tsering, monks, community leaders and youths. (Dy CM’s Media Cell)
