Tawang Police arrests Post Office staff in Rs 39.25 lakh fund misappropriation case

ITANAGAR, Sep 17: Tawang Police has arrested a 46-year-old employee of Tawang Post Office in connection with an alleged financial irregularity involving government funds of Rs 39.25 lakh.

Police said the case followed a written complaint lodged on September 13 by H Nilamai Singh, Inspector of Post Offices, Bomdila Postal Sub-Division, after discrepancies were detected during a verification of the Tawang Post Office.

As per the complaint, Sangeeta Ale, a multi tasking staff (MTS), allegedly failed to account for government funds totalling Rs 39,25,211 as of September 10.

The alleged amount includes Rs 34,49,369 collected as Postal Life Insurance (PLI) and Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI) premiums between January 2023 and May 2024. The amount was allegedly neither accounted for nor produced despite repeated reminders.

The remaining Rs 4,75,842 reportedly pertains to unremitted counter cash.

Police said that during questioning, the employee acknowledged the shortage and furnished a written statement/undertaking regarding the alleged financial discrepancy.

Following the complaint, Tawang Police Station registered a case and initiated an investigation under the supervision of Lady Inspector Nii Angu, OC, Tawang Police Station.

Ale was arrested on September 14 after completion of the prescribed legal formalities and was subsequently remanded to police custody.

Police said further investigation is in progress to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the alleged misappropriation and establish the complete facts of the case.
