TAWANG, Sep 22: The monthly meeting of the District-Level Narcotics Coordination Committee (NCORD) was held here on Tuesday to review measures against drug abuse and illicit trafficking and strengthen coordination among enforcement agencies and community stakeholders.
The meeting, chaired by Additional Deputy Commissioner Rinchin Leta, was attended by Superintendent of Police Tasi Darang, DySP Togum Gonggo, representatives of the Army, paramilitary forces, intelligence agencies, market welfare committees, taxi associations, youth organisations and other stakeholders.
DySP Gonggo presented an overview of enforcement, preventive and awareness activities undertaken by the district police and other NCORD members, including the destruction of wild cannabis.
During the discussion, members shared suggestions on improving coordination, information sharing, enforcement and community participation in efforts to address drug abuse.
SP Tasi Darang called for continued coordination and collective responsibility towards a drug-free Tawang. He urged departments and organisations to inform the District Police about drug-awareness programmes conducted in the district so that the activities could be properly documented and reported under NCORD initiatives.
Darang also stressed the need for vigilance against possible deliberate cultivation of cannabis in isolated areas, besides naturally occurring wild cannabis.
ADC Rinchin Leta emphasised timely information sharing and cooperation among stakeholders and said a roster of officers would be prepared to facilitate coordinated responses with security agencies in substance- and drug-related cases.
The ADC appreciated the recent efforts of Lungla Police, in collaboration with the SSB and local villagers, to uproot wild cannabis. He asked the Agriculture Department to explore safe and effective scientific methods for controlling its growth and urged paramilitary forces to support police and communities in identifying and destroying wild cannabis.
The meeting concluded with DySP Gonggo assuring members that the suggestions would be followed up and reviewed at the next NCORD meeting. He appealed for sustained community participation and vigilance to protect young people from drug abuse. (DIPRO)
