RONO HILLS, Oct 2: Under the ongoing Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) 2026 campaign, Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU) observed Swachh Bharat Diwas 2026 today, commemorating the 157th anniversary of Gandhi Jayanti.
As part of the celebration, a cleanliness drive was conducted from the old auditorium to the mini auditorium, with more than 200 participants including students, NSS volunteers, faculty members, officers and other members of the University community. The drive reflected the spirit of “Ek Din, Ek Ghanta, Ek Saath,” encouraging collective participation and responsibility towards maintaining a clean and green campus.
The celebration was graced by Prof Shivaraj, RGU Vice Chancellor, and Prof Vandana Upadhyay, Finance Officer (i/c), along with University officers, faculty members, staff, students, NSS volunteers and other members of the University community.
A major highlight of the programme was the felicitation of the Safai Mitras for their dedicated and tireless services in maintaining the cleanliness and sanitation of the University campus during the Swachhata Hi Seva campaign.
The NSS volunteers of RGU were also felicitated in recognition of their active participation and contribution to the cleanliness drive and various activities conducted under the SHS 2026 campaign.
Addressing the gathering, Prof Shivaraj emphasized the importance of making cleanliness a continuous practice and a collective responsibility. He encouraged the University community to work together towards building a clean, healthy and sustainable campus, while upholding the values of Mahatma Gandhi.
The programme also highlighted the importance of Gandhian values such as truth, simplicity, service and social responsibility, and encouraged students and members of the University community to carry forward the message of Swachhata beyond the campaign period.
Earlier, the programme commenced with the University Song, followed by the welcome address by Gomar Basar, Dy Registrar IISYD and Programme Officer NSS. He highlighted the importance of cleanliness in the vision of Mahatma Gandhi and emphasized that cleanliness should be treated not merely as a civic duty but as a way of life.
