ITANAGAR, Oct 7: The Changlang Police, in a joint operation with Assam Rifles, seized 659.7 grams of suspected heroin and arrested a man in Nampong area, police said on Wednesday.
Acting on specific intelligence on Tuesday, a joint team of Nampong Police and Assam Rifles intercepted a motorcycle and recovered the suspected contraband. The accused was identified as Sentu Hangmu of Lazu in Tirap district.
A case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and the accused arrested after completion of legal formalities under the close supervision of SP Changlang, police said.
The seizure was part of intensified anti-drug operations in Changlang district. Police said seven NDPS cases were registered in September, resulting in the arrest of 10 alleged drug peddlers, including a woman, and recovery of more than 2.5 kg narcotic substances.
During the month-long drive, security agencies seized 2,507.88 grams of narcotics, including 1,848.18 grams of suspected opium and 734.08 grams of suspected heroin.
The Changlang Police said joint operations with Assam Rifles, CRPF and STF would continue as part of its efforts to curb the illegal drug trade and promote a drug-free society.
