JAIRAMPUR, Oct 9: A healthy baby girl weighing 2.8 kg was delivered inside a 108 emergency ambulance while a pregnant woman was being transported from Community Health Centre (CHC), Jairampur, to Mayflower Hospital for further medical care.
The delivery took place at around 7.30 am in the forested stretch between Jairampur and Jagun when the woman's labour progressed rapidly during transit.
According to EMRI Green Health Services, which operates the 108 free emergency ambulance service in Arunachal Pradesh, the emergency control room received a call from CHC Jairampur regarding the referral of a pregnant woman experiencing delivery-related complications and hypertension.
The ambulance promptly reached the health centre to transport the woman to Mayflower Hospital. However, as her labour progressed rapidly en route, delivery became unavoidable.
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Roicho Mossang and ambulance pilot Ismail Kingbo acted promptly and assisted the woman in delivering a healthy baby girl inside the ambulance.
Following the delivery, Mossang provided essential newborn care, including an Apgar assessment. The newborn scored 9 out of 10, indicating a reassuring initial condition. The ambulance team also provided necessary post-delivery care to the mother.
Both the mother and the newborn were subsequently taken safely to Mayflower Hospital for further assessment and medical attention.
The incident highlights the crucial role of the 108 Emergency Ambulance Service in providing timely pre-hospital care, particularly during obstetric emergencies in remote areas. The prompt response and dedication of the ambulance personnel helped ensure the safe delivery and transfer of both mother and child.
The free 108 Emergency Ambulance Service, operated by EMRI Green Health Services, formerly GVK EMRI, was launched in Arunachal Pradesh on June 21, 2021, by Chief Minister Pema Khandu. Since its launch, the service has benefited more than 40,000 people across the state. It has assisted in over 318 deliveries, including 221 births inside ambulances, according to the service provider.
