TAWANG, Oct 23: The Tawang district administration has stepped up preparations for two major events scheduled in the district later this month — the Exposition of the Sacred Relics of Shakyamuni Buddha from October 31 to November 7 and the International Tourism Mart (ITM) 2026 from October 28 to 31.
Deputy Commissioner Namgyal Angmo reviewed arrangements for both events at separate meetings on Friday, directing departments, sub-committees and stakeholders to complete pending tasks on time and ensure smooth coordination.
For the sacred relic exposition at Tawang Monastery, the administration reviewed arrangements for public convenience, medical assistance, cultural programmes, deployment of liaison officers and crowd management.
Coordination chairman Tenzin Jorden briefed the meeting on preparations, while Superintendent of Police Tasi Darang outlined a three-tier security plan to ensure the safety of devotees, dignitaries and visitors.
The exposition’s organising committee also requested a ban on animal slaughter across Tawang district until the event concludes. The proposal was discussed at the meeting.
Darshan of the sacred relics will be organised in phases on a block-wise basis to facilitate orderly participation. The first session will coincide with Abhidhamma Day, with separate arrangements for monks, nuns and delegates. Volunteers and security personnel deployed for the event will be given an opportunity for darshan on November 7. Identity badges or ribbons will be issued to devotees to facilitate entry.
At the ITM review meeting, officials discussed delegate reception, transportation, sightseeing, village visits and logistical arrangements, including the reception of international participants travelling from Sela Pass to Tawang headquarters. Familiarisation tours to lesser-explored destinations are also being considered to showcase the district’s landscapes, cultural heritage and village experiences.
Angmo said the concerned authority had been requested to ensure proper maintenance of the Sela road for tourist safety and convenience. The meeting also proposed cleanliness drives at major tourist destinations, including Tawang Monastery, and stressed proper maintenance of public conveniences. The monastery administration was requested to prevent tourist vehicles from parking outside Chhamleng Gate.
The meetings were attended by officials, Zilla Parishad Members, police officers, departmental representatives and members of the respective sub-committees.
The twin events are expected to showcase Tawang’s Buddhist heritage, tourism potential and cultural traditions while welcoming devotees, delegates and visitors from across the country and abroad.
