Geku Police seeks public cooperation during SUMP-related protests

GEKU, Oct 23: The Geku Police Outpost has appealed to residents of Geku, Katan and Komkar to allow local police personnel to move freely while performing their duties during bandhs, rallies and protests related to the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP).

In an appeal issued by the Officer-in-Charge, the police expressed concern over instances in which police vehicles were allegedly obstructed during SUMP-related law-and-order situations, affecting the movement of personnel to and from duty locations.

The appeal clarified that Geku-based police personnel are responsible for maintaining law and order and responding to criminal cases and emergencies within their jurisdiction. Unlike personnel deployed from outside, local police must continue serving the community even after other forces return to their respective locations.

Emphasising their impartial role, the police stated that they neither support nor oppose the SUMP or the proposed dam, but are duty-bound to maintain peace, prevent disturbances and discharge their responsibilities in accordance with the law.

Acknowledging the concerns and emotional attachment of local residents to their land, the police said they respected the community's sentiments regarding the project.

However, the OC urged residents not to obstruct Geku Police personnel while they travel to and from their duty locations during any protest or bandh.

The appeal stressed that public concerns over the project should be distinguished from the operational responsibilities of local law-enforcement personnel.

Reiterating their commitment to protecting the community and maintaining peace, the Geku Police sought public understanding and cooperation to ensure that law and order remained under control.
