NERIST conducts training program for AEs of RWD, GoAP

ITANAGAR, Oct 30: The Department of Civil Engineering, North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology (NERIST) organized a one-day orientation-cum-training programme on Technical Exposure and Hands-on Learning for the newly inducted Assistant Engineers of the Rural Works Department (RWD), GoAP, on Thursday.

The programme, coordinated by Dr Yamem Tamut and Dr Tori Basar from Dept of CE (NERIST), aimed to enhance the technical knowledge, practical skills, and professional competencies of the newly recruited engineers by bridging the gap between theoretical concepts and field-level engineering practices. Special emphasis was laid on strengthening their understanding of civil engineering applications, construction practices, and technical challenges encountered in infrastructure development, particularly in the challenging terrain and climatic conditions of Arunachal Pradesh.

The participating AEs were accompanied by Deli Khambo, Superintending Engineer; Onyang Tatak, Executive Engineer; and P D Thangamani Appan, JE, RWD (GoAP).

S Sahu, In-charge HoD Civil Engineering (NERIST), highlighted the importance of continuous technical learning, practical exposure, and collaboration between academic institutions and government engineering departments for improving the quality and sustainability of infrastructure development.

The technical sessions were delivered by Dr Yamem Tamut, Associate Professor, and Debabrata Das, Assistant Professor, Dept of CE (NERIST). The sessions focused on practical aspects of civil engineering, with particular emphasis on road infrastructure, engineering challenges, causes of road failures, preventive measures, and appropriate remedial interventions. The importance of sound engineering judgement, quality control, proper construction practices, and effective field supervision was also highlighted.

Following the technical sessions, laboratory visits and practical demonstrations were arranged to provide the trainees with hands-on exposure to laboratory facilities, testing procedures, and engineering applications. These visits offered opportunities to relate theoretical knowledge to practical engineering investigations and reinforced the importance of material testing and quality assurance in construction projects.

The programme served as a valuable platform for knowledge sharing and professional interaction between the faculty members of NERIST and the engineers of the RWD. It also underscored the importance of institutional collaboration in capacity building and the professional development of government engineers.
