ITANAGAR, Nov 5: The Gender Council of the Arunachal Pradesh Union of Working Journalists (APUWJ) held its inaugural meeting at the Arunachal Press Club here on Wednesday, bringing together women journalists from across the media fraternity to discuss workplace challenges and ways to strengthen mutual support.
Led by Gender Council co-convenor Tsering Zangmu Dingla, the meeting provided a platform for junior journalists to share their professional experiences, workplace grievances and challenges, while senior journalists offered guidance, shared their experiences and extended support.
The interaction fostered mutual understanding, mentorship and professional solidarity, while underscoring the need for a supportive, inclusive and safe working environment for women in the media sector.
The council resolved to organise monthly interactions to encourage wider participation, strengthen professional relationships and promote collective growth and empowerment among women journalists.
The Gender Council is a dedicated platform for women working across different sectors of the media industry. It aims to provide a common space for women media professionals to connect, exchange experiences, discuss workplace concerns and collectively address challenges affecting their professional lives.
An integral part of APUWJ, the council was initiated under the broader initiative of the Indian Journalists Union (IJU) to promote gender equality, workplace safety, dignity and equal representation of women in the media. Its focus areas include workplace sexual harassment, discrimination, exploitation, unequal pay, inadequate maternity benefits and other professional concerns faced by women journalists.
Through regular interactions, awareness initiatives and collective engagement, the council seeks to strengthen solidarity, encourage institutional support and promote an environment where women journalists can work with dignity, security and equal opportunities.
The inaugural meeting marked a step towards building a stronger support network for women journalists in Arunachal Pradesh and fostering a more inclusive media fraternity.
